First Aid Tips for Choking

Choking is a potentially life-threatening emergency that requires immediate attention. Here are some first aid tips for choking:

  1. Encourage coughing: If the person is coughing, it means they can still breathe. Encourage them to continue coughing to try and dislodge the object.
  2. Perform back blows: If coughing is not effective, stand behind the person and give them five sharp blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
  3. Perform abdominal thrusts: If back blows do not work, stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it just above the belly button. Grasp the fist with your other hand and give a series of upward thrusts into the abdomen.
  4. Call for help: If the person is still choking after attempting back blows and abdominal thrusts, call for emergency medical assistance immediately.
  5. Check for signs of breathing: If the person becomes unresponsive, perform CPR.

It is important to note that choking can be a life-threatening emergency, so it is important to act quickly and seek medical attention if necessary.
